Tribute to the 57 Gibson Moderne

    • We have built a Tribute to the Gibson Moderne which has long been known as  "the guitar that never was" ...or, was it? Designed as the third member of a trio of guitars in the Modernist Series, prototypes of which were displayed at the 1957 NAMM show, the Moderne was originally intended to be the sibling of the Flying V and the Explorer, but never made it off the launch pad . The Moderne is perhaps rarest and most elusive Gibson guitar ever created and while clues have surfaced, no original has ever been proven to exist.
    • I started with lots of research for dimensions, components, design and history. After gathering data from a smattering of places, I then used a CAD program to draw out some detailed plans.
    • We stayed as close to what could have been original as possible based on the information gathered. It has a mahogany body, mahogany neck, and ebony fretboard. 24.75" scale length and has been done with the 2 volume, 1 tone electronics set up.

    We used Gibson components including;

    Gibson Tuneomatic Bridge

    Gibson Stop Bar Tail Piece

    Gibson Headstock Logo (optional)

    Gibson Top Hat Knobs

    Gibson Vintage Light Strings.

    MORE PICTURES BELOW Click Here

This handmade custom Offset Guitar is the result of several things we wanted to test in an electric guitar build. It came out really nice!

It has the Jazzmaster™ body style made from a solid Roasted Alder body with a 25.5” scale length. It has a roasted maple quarter sawn neck with a dual action truss rod.

It has Schaller locking tuning machines and a Jazzmaster™ style bridge and tremolo.

The finish is hand rubbed black satin . The finish is black satin and on the neck, highlights  showing thru – similar to a very light relic but totally sealed. It looks and feels great.

The neck is a ferrule system bolt on to ensure a tight, long-lasting fit.

It is mother-of-pearl block inlays on the ebony fretboard along with a custom design truss rod cover with a block MOP inlay.

For electronics, we went with the total EMG package of JMaster active pickups and installed an easy access battery box on the back of the guitar.

Featuring Alnico V magnets and wide-stacked coils, the active single-coil designs are driven by a vintage-inspired preamp that promises to combine classic feel and playing response with the benefits of an active preamp – namely low noise, more even string response and consistent output.

That’s no rhythm circuit up there on the upper horn – instead, EMG has packed the pickguards with a range of boosts to shape the sound, which function no matter what pickup selection is active.

First up is the SPC Presence Control, which fattens up tone with a broad midrange boost, adjusted via the roller control nearest the neck. This can be swapped out for a flat boost of up to 12dB via the upper-horn toggle switch.

The other roller tweaks the company’s EXG Expander, which boosts low and high frequencies for chunky yet sparkly sounds.

It plays and sounds great and gives the player plenty of options with just the controls on the guitar alone.
